Connect Claude Code to WordPress with Delta’s MCP server

Claude Code runs in your terminal. With Delta it also runs your WordPress site: pages, templates, the design system, content types and the plugins Delta integrates. The connection is one command. Delta’s MCP server lives inside the theme, so there is no bridge to install, no plugin to add and no REST client to write.

What you need

  • A site with Delta active and an administrator login.
  • Claude Code installed, so claude works in your terminal.
  • A site your machine can reach. Claude Code connects from your computer, so local sites (.test, .local, localhost) work as well as live ones.

Step 1: copy the command

In wp-admin open Delta → Connect and pick the Claude Code tab. Delta shows a command written for your site. For a site at example.com it looks like this:

claude mcp add --transport http --scope user delta-example-com 'https://example.com/wp-json/21press-delta/mcp'

The server name is delta- followed by your host. --scope user makes the server available in every project folder. Do not edit ~/.claude.json by hand: a server under a project entry only loads in that folder, and Claude Code rewrites the file while it runs.

Step 2: sign in

Run the command, start Claude Code, and run /mcp. Select the server and choose Authenticate. A browser tab opens on your WordPress login screen; log in as an administrator and approve. No password is copied into any file. The sign-in is OAuth against your own site, and the token can be revoked from the Connect screen at any time.

Step 3: say hello

Ask: “look at delta-example-com and tell me what’s there”. The agent reads its Delta briefing, checks the design system and reports back. If it does, you are connected. On a new site, carry on with Set up your site.

Alternative: Application Password

Use this when OAuth cannot complete: a host that blocks /.well-known/ paths, or a machine with no browser. On the same tab, Delta creates a WordPress Application Password named for Claude Code and writes the command with the header included:

claude mcp add --transport http --scope user delta-example-com 'https://example.com/wp-json/21press-delta/mcp' --header 'Authorization: Basic …'

The password is shown once. Generating again replaces it, and the old command stops working.

Working in Claude Code

Claude Code sees four tools and they never change: start-here, discover-abilities, get-ability-info and execute-ability. Everything else is an ability the agent discovers as it needs it. See Tools and abilities.

Keep the site open in a browser beside the terminal. The Front panel lets you select an element on the live page and tell Claude Code which one you mean. Actions that hand out control of the site, such as installing a plugin or creating a user, wait for your approval.

If it does not connect

  • A server with this name already exists: run claude mcp remove --scope user delta-example-com, then add it again.
  • The server shows as failed after it worked: run /mcp and authenticate again. The token may have been revoked on the Connect screen.
  • Delta tools are missing in one project: the server was added with project scope. Remove it and add it again with --scope user.
  • The Connect screen warns that discovery is blocked: your host blocks the OAuth discovery URLs. Use the Application Password command.
