Can You Build a WordPress Website with AI? What to Expect

What AI can build on a WordPress site today, the routes you can take, and what you still decide.

A blueprint grid on a black ground, its cells filling with teal pixels from the bottom up, and a light caret cell where the next cell is placed.

Can you build a WordPress website with AI? Yes, but there are several ways to approach it. You can start with help writing content, connect an AI assistant to an existing site, or use a theme or builder that gives the agent tools for creating pages.

The useful question is what you want the AI to do, and how you want to maintain the website afterwards. A site owner updating a few posts needs a different setup from an agency building new client websites every week.

Start with WordPress’s own AI tools

WordPress now includes more of the foundation needed for AI integrations. Its AI Client connects features to an AI provider, while the Abilities API lets themes and plugins describe actions an agent can use.

For everyday users, the practical starting point is the separately installed AI plugin and a connected provider. It offers tools such as title suggestions, summaries, image alt text and editorial assistance. You can experiment without changing how you normally build your site.

There is still some setup. The core foundation alone does not give a default installation a complete AI website builder. Connecting an external agent through WordPress’s MCP Adapter is another step. WordPress’s introduction explains these pieces.

Keep building with Gutenberg

If you prefer the WordPress block editor, you can use a theme that adds AI tools around that workflow.

Ollie is one example. Its editor tools help you find patterns and write content. Its MCP connection also lets an external agent assemble pages from Ollie patterns, edit content and work with global styles.

The appeal is straightforward: you continue working with WordPress blocks and an existing design library. The AI helps select and adapt those designs. You can then open the result in the editor and refine it yourself.

Ollie’s MCP setup uses the WordPress MCP Adapter, and its documentation describes the integration as experimental. That is worth understanding before treating it as part of a regular client workflow.

Connect an agent to the site you already have

Another route is to add an MCP plugin to an existing WordPress installation. MCP is a standard way for AI assistants to use tools provided by other software. Here, those tools let the assistant interact with your website.

These plugins vary considerably. WPVibe combines a plugin with a hosted MCP service for content, media and other site operations. Easy MCP AI, from Vertigo Studio, runs its connection inside WordPress and exposes tools and supported plugin abilities.

Novamira takes a broader development approach, including PHP execution, database access and file editing. Its documentation positions it for development and staging environments.

This route is useful to explore when you want to keep your current theme. Check which operations the connection supports, especially if your pages depend on a particular builder or plugin. Access to WordPress content does not automatically mean the agent understands every layout system installed on it.

Work inside a page builder

Builders are also adding connections for external AI agents.

Elementor’s MCP lets agents work with its native structures, including Atomic elements, global classes, variables and templates. For an existing site, check which layouts it supports: an older page may use a different structure from the elements the integration can edit.

Bricks provides abilities for pages, elements, templates and design-system data through the WordPress MCP Adapter. Its AI abilities are currently described as experimental.

Etch’s Connector offers another approach: an agent works through Etch’s public API in an open builder tab.

An AI connection is most useful when it understands how your website is built. Theme and builder integrations can provide tools for their own elements, templates and styles, along with instructions that help the agent use them correctly. That lets you keep a familiar editing workflow while giving the agent more specific guidance.

Delta: MCP built into the theme

Delta brings the connection and guidance into the theme itself. Its MCP tools let the agent create pages, edit templates and work with the site’s design system, while its skills explain how to use the templates, design system and HTML, CSS and JavaScript conventions. Together, they give the agent both the ability to make changes and the context to make them consistently.

The pages use HTML, CSS and JavaScript directly, so there is no separate page builder to install or builder-specific MCP connection to configure. Shared colours, typography and components give the agent a common design context across the website.

The WordPress block editor is still used for posts and basic static content, while Delta handles the site’s design and templates.

Choosing an approach

Think about who will edit the website after it is built. If you or your client prefer blocks or a familiar builder, look for AI tools that work with that setup. If you prefer HTML, CSS and JavaScript, Delta offers that route. The choice should make sense both while you build the site and when someone returns to update it.
